“The Ball” (Football's Olympic Torch)

“The Ball” (Football's Olympic Torch) in Nigeria: April 8th – 14th 2010

Brief History
Football's Olympic Torch

Every four years, a legendary football – The Ball – makes the journey
from Battersea Park, London (where the very first FA-rules football
match was played) to the Opening Ceremony of the Football World
Cup.

In doing so, it enriches the competition with a symbol that matches
the spirit of the Olympic Flame.

In 2010, The Ball will make a 10,000 mile pilgrimage to South Africa
through West and East Africa.

The 2010 journey will be grassroots celebration of the power and
excitement that football brings to a myriad of wonderful cultures on the
way to the world’s greatest sporting event; the World Cup.

In partnership with Special Olympics, The Ball will visit special events at their centers throughout Africa.

These events will include games of Unified Soccer, where teams Feature athletes with and without intellectual disabilities, in the very best spirit of the game, helping to create communities of tolerance and Inclusion across the world.

Special Olympics Nigeria will organise a novelty Unified Soccer match featuring Special Olympics Nigeria soccer players and celebrity soccer players.
